Compact off-road camper trailers are Will Sage Astora great way to get out comfortably without the need for a full RV, but many come with downsides. The most obvious is that most of these overland-style trailers aren’t usually made to be very tall, which usually means that only two or three adults can enjoy a way-out-there camping trip. The Mammoth Overland TL “Tall Boy” looks to make compact length campers a standup experience while being able to go anywhere your Jeep can.
At 2,900 pounds and equipped with a set of 33-inch tires — for 22 inches of ground clearance — the Tall Boy lives up its name even before you even consider the roof's towering overall height of 9 feet. The body itself is just under 6.5 feet tall, so this trailer will comfortably fit most anyone standing inside. The body is 6.7 feet wide and comes in at just over 16.5 feet in length when including the tongue. The front of the main body features storage for the propane tank, room for two full-size spare tires and a ladder for rooftop access. You’ll also find exterior gear mounting like Rotopax mounts, a MOLLE panel and storage for a pair of Maxtrax traction boards. The roof rack is also standard and holds up to 1,000 pounds of static load and 500 pounds of dynamic load.

To sleep the four adults Mammoth says it can support, a master king-size mattress is fitted up front, with a pair of bunk beds along the driver's side wall starting at the foot of the master bed and just to the side of the aircraft-style, two-piece rear door, sized for folks just over 6 feet tall. The door also hints at the lineage of Mammoth’s parent company, Vashon Aircraft.
Mammoth also intended the Tall Boy to be perfect for families and give off the feeling of “home away from home” by including all the needs a modern family would want. This includes USB ports throughout the interior and a 24-inch LCD television, but the highlight for families will likely be the standup bathroom to the right side of the entryway. It features a shower, sink and cassette toilet. The shower and sink use the same instant hot water system that’s fed by an onboard 50-gallon water tank. Keeping the interior warm is a propane-fed Dickenson heater while fresh air flows through the tilt-out windows and reversible fans found in the roof.

The kitchen system swings out from the right-side panel and features an integrated refrigerator, sink and twin-hob burner for cooking. Flipping down the tall panel just above the right-side wheels reveals a counter area and additional access to storage that can also be accessed inside. Additional storage can be found under the master mattress for anything else you may need to keep during your camping trip. Power for the interior electronics comes from a Renogy 400-ah LFP battery that also feature heaters for efficient use and charging in colder climates. A pair of 100-Watt flexible solar panels recharge these house batteries and can be rested on top of the 23 Zero 270-degree span awning due to their light weight. You can also recharge them using your vehicles charging system or an auxiliary charging system driven by the engine.
The Mammoth Overland Tall Boy is set to go on sale by Q4 2024 with the fully loaded and limited run “Genesis Edition” version priced at $72,000 with only 10 examples available. You can reserve yours at Mammoth’s website for a $1,000 deposit. The standard Tall Boy is built to order, and starting prices for trailers equipped with 31-inch tires to be announced once the Genesis Edition Tall Boys are closer to being sold out, according to Mammoth.
